The Beauty of Lake Bled

Another perk of my imagined plan to move to Ljubljana would be the proximity to Lake Bled. We took the train from the city to the local train station and from there it was a short taxi ride to our hotel. We were staying in Hotel Astoria, just a short walk from the lake and the start of two thoroughly enjoyable days exploring.

It really is one of the most beautiful places in the world, with crystal clear turquiose water and surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the country including the Triglav, the highest. Apparently you’re not a true Slovenian unless you’ve climbed to the top but on asking lots of locals, not many actually had! It’s not exactly a simple stroll.

Within hours of arriving we were already heading to one of the nearby hillsides for a ride on the summer tabogan – I didn’t enjoy the views as was slightly terrified the entire time. After that exhilarating/terrifying start we opted for a gentler afternoon, enjoying some of the famous Bled Cake and walking up to the castle where I was much more relaxed and able to enjoy the picture perfect views.

While staying here we were quite active with an early morning run around the lake (before it got too hot) and a wonderful afternoon spent cooling off by swimming in the lake. Another water based activity that unexpectedly took place was white water rafting, something I never thought I’d do but I found it surprisingly enjoyable and taking a dip in the river at the end was a treat. I had never swam in a lake or a river before and I ticked both off in the space of 24 hours!

Proof that I did it!

The food wasn’t as good in Lake Bled as in the capital city but we found some nice spots and made the most of the stunning location. I did a couple of laps of the lake while we were there, one running and another on a roasting afternoon with my camera. It was hard to restrain myself from taking thousands of photographs in one of the most picturesque places I have ever been.

Our next stop would be Zagreb after a rather eventful train ride – I’ll tell all in my next post!
